Title: “Low Salivary Testosterone Levels in Patients with Breast Cancer” Authors:
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction: Correlation between circulating sex steroid levels and breast cancer has been controversial, with measurement of free, or bioavailable hormone rarely available. Salivary hormone levels represent the bioavailable fraction. We aimed to assess correlation between salivary sex steroid levels and breast cancer prevalence. Methods: Salivary hormone levels of testosterone (T), Estradiol (E2), Progesterone (P), Estriol (E3), Estrone (E1), DHEAS and Cortisol (C) were measured by Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA) in 357 women with histologically verified breast cancer and 184 age-matched control women. Results: Salivary T and DHEAS levels were significantly lower in breast cancer cases vs controls (27.2+13.9 vs 32.2+17.5 pg/ml, p<0.001 for T and 5.3+4.3 vs 6.4+4.5 ng/ml, p=0.007 for DHEAS). E2 and E1 levels were elevated and E3 levels were lowered in cases vs. controls. Conclusions: Salivary T levels representing bioavailable hormone are significantly lower in women with breast cancer compared to age-matched control women. Key terms: saliva, testosterone, androgens, breast cancer

Evaluation of Salivary Level of Heat Shock Protein 70 in Patients with Breast Cancer
Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women worldwide. Increased molecular and genetic information about cancer has improved diagnostic, screening, and treatment methods for cancer. Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) is overexpressed in breast cancer patients and involved in malignant properties of breast cancer. Due to the noninvasive nature of saliva collection and ...

متن کاملT-helper Type 1 and 2 Cytokine Levels in Patients with Benign and Malignant Salivary Gland Tumors
Background: Salivary gland tumors are among malignancies that have high recurrence rate. Immune responses in salivary gland tumors have not been well elucidated. T helper type 1 (Th1) and Th2 cytokines have been reported to play a role in the outcome of head and neck cancers. Objective: To evaluate the serum levels of interferon gamma (IFN- γ), as the hallmark of Th1 cytokines, and interleukin-...

Abstract Background: Breast cancer is more common in women with high serum testosterone level. Few studies showed that high level of serum testosterone is associated with poor prognosis. The association of testosterone level with histopathological findings has not been studied yet. In this study we investigated this association. Methods: Patients referred to a medical oncology clinic with...
